The Federal Shariat Court, the five high courts, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan comprise the upper echelon of the legal system.
According to a news release from the LJCP on Friday, the report, Women in the Justice Sector, intends to present statistics about women who work in Pakistan's judicial system, spotlighting judges, attorneys, prosecutors, and other staff members.
According to the data, there are 3,142 judges and judicial officers employed nationwide at the moment. Of these, 572 are women and 2,570 are men, making up 18% of all active judges.
The report also discloses that the Federal Shariat Court, the five high courts, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan employ 126 justices at the upper echelon of the judiciary at present. Only seven of the 126 judges are female, with 119 of them being male. As a result, only 5.5 percent of judges at the higher echelons of the judiciary are female.
In 2021, panelists at the Asma Jahangir Conference session "Mainstreaming Gender Equality in the Judiciary" discussed the state of women in Pakistan's court in a nearby Lahore hotel.
The panelists came to the conclusion that women's underrepresentation in Pakistan's judiciary, particularly in the higher echelons, is a mirror of how they are treated generally in society. The problem might be resolved by taking bold action, which calls for a strong will to confront it at all levels.
Legal advisor to the International Commission of Jurists for South Asia The near-total absence of women in the judiciary, according to Reema Omer, is also a catastrophe for the democracy of the nation. She explained that the lack of female judges in the upper judiciary stemmed from a specific worldview.
Out of the 12 male justices on the Supreme Court, only two are female, the article said.
Three of the most female judges are now serving in the Sindh High Court. As of right now, the Peshawar High Court, the High Court of Balochistan, and the Federal Shariat Court do not have any female judges.
A similar pattern is seen in the report for the district judiciary, where there are just 565 female attorneys out of 3,016 active staff members, or less than 5% of the total.
Additionally, the survey reported that 230,879 attorneys nationwide were registered with various provincial bar associations. Out of this total, 40,000 lawyers are women and 198,100 lawyers are men.
As to the research, women have made noteworthy contributions to the judicial sector of the nation. However, it also underlines that their presence in the sector is not commensurate with their share of the population.
"It is advised that action be taken by the government and other pertinent parties to promote the involvement of more women in the justice system.
