Microsoft announced on Friday that the state-sponsored hacker group from Russia, Midnight Blizzard, was attempting to re-enter its networks using data that it had taken from an earlier intrusion into the company's business emails.
The hacking collective known as Nobelium gained access to Microsoft's corporate email networks in January and took emails and documents from employee accounts.
"In recent weeks, we have seen evidence that Midnight Blizzard is using information initially exfiltrated from our corporate email systems to gain, or attempt to gain, unauthorised access," the business stated in a blog post.
According to Microsoft, certain of its internal systems and source code repositories are included in this data.
The announcement caused the company's shares to slightly decline.
"It is apparent that Midnight Blizzard is attempting to use secrets of different types it has found," it stated. "Some of these secrets were shared between customers and Microsoft in email, and as we discover them in our exfiltrated email, we have been and are reaching out to these customers to assist them in taking mitigating measures."
According to the firm, there had been an increase in the aggressiveness of the hackers' attempts to breach Microsoft. Consider the "password sprays" that hackers employ, in which a hacker uses the same password on several accounts in an attempt to get access-had grown by up to ten times since their January strike, according to Microsoft.
Prior to now, the Russian embassy located in Washington has not reacted to inquiries concerning comments made by Microsoft on the Midnight Blizzard attack.
Microsoft went on to say that it did not have any proof that the attack had affected any of its customer-facing systems.
